            UTICA - Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, Inc. will celebrate National Community Action Month in May with an open house from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday, May 24 at its offices at 9882 River Road.

            Rep. Michael Arcuri will be at the event from 11 a.m. to 12 noon and will join other local leaders and agency officials to discuss agency programs in the community and how federal American Reinvestment and Recovery Act funds are being used.

MVCAA has used some of the federal stimulus funds to train 20 people for jobs in “green” construction, printing and child care.

            MVCAA’s Weatherization program also has used the stimulus money in partnership with private owners in Rome and Utica to upgrade insulation, windows and household appliances to help many local families cut their energy bills. This partnership also helped maintain or create dozens of private sector construction jobs.

            Visitors to the open house may tour the Community Action building, which recently was expanded to add Head Start classrooms and a larger public meeting room, and Weatherization specialists will demonstrate energy efficiency services.

            Refreshments will be served.
