Back To School Initiative
Getting the family ready to go back to school can be costly; Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency (MVCAA) would like to help! MVCAA can help students get ready for the classroom with new backpacks, school supplies, haircuts and clothing. Thanks to a partnership with Boscov’s Department Stores, families will have the opportunity to purchase clothing for their children and help get them ready for the school year. Also, local barbershops and salons are helping families with basic haircuts for students. Of course, we haven’t forgotten the backpack and supplies. MVCAA will have age-appropriate backpacks for students to provide them with the tools they need to start the year on a positive, even level. Income eligibility applies and funding is limited, so families who would like to participate in MVCAA’s Back to School Initiative should stop in one of MVCAA’s Community Action Access Points August 13-15 to determine eligibility. Families will receive their backpacks stuffed with supplies, haircut appointment times and details on how to participate in the school shopping at Boscov’s upon confirmation of eligibility. The Access Points are open 8:30 am – 4:00 pm and are located at the following 3 locations: ROME: 203 W. Liberty Street; UTICA: 1100 Miller Street; ILION: 38 Morgan Street. Anyone who is not able to stop in one of these sites during the registration period should call ahead at 315-624-9930 to schedule an alternative appointment. Funding for the Initiative is provided by the NYS Department of State’s Community Services Block Grant.
“MVCAA is here for families to ensure that every child has the opportunity to start the school year refreshed, prepared and able to focus on their school work. We can relieve some of the stress of the preparation for the new year by providing the basics for families, and we will still be here throughout the year for families to continue that support of a positive family focus.” Amy Turner, Executive Director, said of the Back to School Initiative.
