Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, Inc. stands against racism and supports the Black Lives Matter movement. As an organization that cares about the entire community, we believe it's important for us to engage in conversations regarding racial justice. Our Board of Directors met over the summer with our good friend, Dave Mathis, as a facilitator to discuss why these issues should be and are very important to our work. Amy Turner, Executive Director, and Evon M. Ervin, Deputy Director, developed a video at the beginning of this country’s racial pandemic denouncing racism. We organized staff conversations around Dr. John Powell’s work, “Creating a Sense of Belonging in a Time of Othering”. Amy and Evon created a safe place to have difficult conversations that allowed us to explore our differences, learn how to listen to one another, be kind, seek answers and create a sense of wonder. This word art was created by collecting frequently used words that staff felt created a sense of belonging. We think this is an outstanding visual of who we are as an agency and will keep us grounded in our work of ‘Helping People and Changing Lives” as we continue to find our way through some very challenging times. We will continue these conversations over the next several weeks and hopefully be offering some opportunities for the community to join us!
